LG V50 ThinQ 5G: Two Screens Show More Than One

“Welcome to a revolution in the world of connectivity where everything can happen at speeds never seen before.” These are the words chosen by LG to introduce its first terminal compatible with 5G networks; An LG V50 ThinQ that is already on sale exclusively through Vodafone, the first operator to launch a 5G commercial network.

They have their reason for being because thanks to this connectivity you can enjoy wireless speeds of up to 10 Gbps (a bandwidth greater than many domestic fibre connections) with a latency of 1 millisecond in areas where it is already deployed: in total, fifteen Spanish cities. That it is available does not mean that it is extended or stable, as we have seen during the tests.

We explain ourselves with the example of Madrid: if you walk through the Puerta del Sol or Gran Vía it is possible to enjoy 5G without problem (and what a speed!), But when you continue the journey to the Puerta de Alcalá we see how the mobile goes to connect to a 4G + network. And so throughout the downtown area. In the suburbs and surrounding villages, there is virtually no coverage yet.

This situation, which has its explanation that the expansion of this technology is still at a very preliminary level, will be reduced until it disappears at the moment when the deployment of networks is completed, from 2020. For now, this test serves to see its potential: high-quality streaming content without delays, online games …

LG V50 ThinQ: Double screen

Compatibility with 5G networks is not the only outstanding feature of this LG V50 ThinQ 5G. Surely, for many users, the presence of a double screen draws much more attention: it is important to keep in mind that it does not imply a flexible surface nor does it serve to create an extended viewing area, as Huawei or Samsung proposals do. LG, however, opts for a complimentary screen (with 6.2 inches and OLED technology) that to see and use up to three applications at once or to add some features.

This allows you to view multimedia content while searching for data on Google in the main one; read double-page, send an email while consulting reports … During some games, it also becomes a joystick (it is compatible with those that are with this type of controls) or a keyboard with which to write more easily in Documents or emails.

Integrated into a fairly thin book-type case, the display surface is Full HD and tactile, perfectly recognizing the touch of the fingers without delay. Its use is optional, and it is possible to choose instead of a normal and current case. One more fact about it: it does not integrate battery, so it uses the terminal.

High end

For the rest, the LG V50 ThinQ 5G is a high-end smartphone and, therefore, has all the features that can be expected from a mobile with these characteristics: water and dust resistance (IP68), as well as hits (MIL-STD 810G), biometric identification, fast and wireless charging … and a configuration that highlights the best Qualcomm processor and 6 GB of RAM. It works therefore very fluidly with all kinds of applications and also in the double-screen mode, although we have noticed that it tends to overheat in some areas.

Equipped with Android 9 Pie, it incorporates a 6.4-inch main screen with OLED technology with QHD + resolution that offers a great content display whenever we are not under direct sun exposure, at which time the brightness stays somewhat fair. When using the second screen, yes, this quality is automatically adjusted to Full HD. It is complemented by two speakers that offer stereo and different sound available, offering an experience at the height of very few.

It remains to talk about the photographic section. If in the front we find two sensors (one of the wide-angle for group selfies), in the rear there are three: a 12-megapixel sensor with standard lens and f1.5; another 16 megapixel with super wide-angle (107 degrees); and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens, 2x optical zoom function and f2.4. In this way, it is possible to take photos in which there is much more scenario, portraits with bokeh effect are made, you can approach the subject without distortion … In general, the performance is positive, although it is a certain level below what we can achieve with the terminals that, at the moment, we can consider as the reference in photography within the high range: iPhone XS or Pixel 3XL.
